Hi

we regularly take the girls on our narrowboat and they have all been in at some time or another. I don't use lifejackets for the same reason as previously given, I think it inhibits their swimming ability. A harness can be useful if you think you can't lift a briard out of the water.
The important safety rules are - any dog or person overboard -immediately knock the engine into neutral and let them swim to you.
If you are negotiating locks at all these are extremely dangerous because of the water current being drawn through the sluice gates. More than one dog has died in locks. If you have enough people the dog can be ashore for locking. We secure them inside the boat as we are two handed most of the time.

We and the dogs love the freedom and togetherness of boating and I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

Kay

I expect his car harness would be fine - had a look on line and you can get them for about £15 if not.

To be honest taking a picture of a wet and bedraggled sir is usually the last thing on my mind having fished him out but I shall try and remember next time he goes for an unscheduled swim Linda!

My best advise is -

I understand why you've got a life jacket, but we didn't get on with MBJ's. 2 main reasons being he just got too hot in it as they are not breathable and most importantly, when he did go in it turned him turtle and inhibited his swimming. When a dog goes in the first thing you want to do is get a hold of them or a boat hook on them. There was only one handle on the back of bo's which made it impossible to get him. He now wears a reflective full body harness which means I can grab him at any point easily, twist and hoick him out.

Go and get him a long rope horses leading rope and identify a point on the boat where he can be tied up out the way leaving you all free if you're needed on the boat. That way you're not likely to fall over him or be worried about him when your attention in needed.

A golf umbrella is well worth taking to provide shade and of course, protection from the rain!

Finally, Bo is a sod for cutting corners on the pontoon at night time. He's gone in 3 times because of it, so watch out for that and take plenty of towels just in case!

Hope you'll an absolutley brilliant time and can't wait to see some pictures! xx
