Hi Shani
We have only ever fed our adult dogs once a day and after we have eaten in the evening(unless we have friends in and eat late). They never expect a meal before then and as they all have different appetites we can leave food(dry) down and one eats her food during the night and the others never overeat. We use Burns and occasionally add a little tinned cat food as a treat.
What about your routine

We feed Meadow twice a day, just under 1 mug full each time, she has Master Blue bag, and its a complete meal, must admit as she is our only briard we do not lift the bowl, but in the evening she tends to go to her bowl grab a mouthful of food and bring it onto her bed in the front room, must not like eating alone. We also give her potato peelings, when getting meals ready, and then add to her bowl any vegetable leftovers with a little bit of gravy or boiled rice when curries etc. have been eaten.

We feed Lulu and Ross once a day, in the morning. We have experimented with more meals and different times, but if they eat later we tend to get 'accidents' in the night

Our boys get fed twice per day - once at breakfast and once in the evening after we have eaten.

Georgie is fed twice a day - as I leave for work and then at our teatime. She has gastric reflux so I have to keep something in her tummy to soak up excess acid - so she has a couple of bonio's too!

Sirius Pud has his breakfast with us, which is toast and cerial. Lunch is tuna, with dentasticks or a bone. His dinner is with ours at about 6pm and he has Butchers food, gravey bones, and bisquts, and his supper is a bag of treats and a can of Irish stout!

Fleur, Bonbon and Tara are fed once a day and don't have a feeding time. I found by doing this they do not pester and it makes it easier for anyone that may be looking after them not being tied to specific times. I also fast them once a week which is something that is advisable if feeding the Raw Meaty Bones diet. Hope this helps.

Henny has Arden Grange large breed, two standard dog meat tin fulls, with half a tin of dog meat (butchers). He is a very fussy eater and it has taken us ages to find something that he will eat. He won't eat two meals a day as we would prefer, so he eats at the same time as us in the evening and he gets three bonio's for breakfast. He thinks he is Roman as he always eats lying down, he starts standing up but after about four or five mouthfuls he gets "tired" and lays down sphinx like to finish his meal often in two sessions. We looked after our friends two labradors recently and while Hen was sniffing his food they had finished! Henny told us he prefers to taste his!

In reply to my Question and to explain why I asked.
I have always been under the impression if you dont feed your Briard more than once a day, they are more prone to getting Bloat etc, also limiting water. Before an after excercise at least 2 hours.
Mine have 2 meals a day.

I have always stuck to this and still will. I passsed this on to all my puppy owners too.

Did you have this advise Question Question Question

A good web site explaining Bloat is on here---- www.thebriardmedicaltrust.org

Neena has always eaten twice a day. She is a picky eater and she now has James Well beloved Fish and Rice which seems to be in smaller pieces and is more refined for her majestys delicate taste pallett!!!! Rolling Eyes
Sometimes she is not fussed about the morning meal at all. If she doesn't eat that i will give her a bonio type treat, or she is sometimes sick, acid i guess.
Generally speaking tho' she eats her tea without any coaxing, especially when her brother Bailey takes a dive at it Shocked Laughing
We were advised by her breeder to feed twice a day and were supplied with plenty of information regarding feeding, diet, and the dreaded bloat.

We were always told the same as Shani. We feed dried in the morning (Royal Canin) and tinned at night (Butchers). He's always ready for his meals and eats the lot straight off. He is the right weight but always seems hungry; he's been wormed but is very active all day. We never have accidents at night but wonder if we're feeding him enough.

I fed my briards twice a day and have continued the practice with my serras. They have a third in the morning and the remaining 2/3 in the evening. This the advice after one of my briards died from a gastric torsion - twisted gut. It is more frequent in large breeds such as the briard. It was a traumatic experience, Sad Ideally too, the dog should have a period of rest from any exercise for around a half an hour before and an hour after they are fed. Wink
P.S. I have just changed from James Wellbeloved Fish and Rice Kibble to their new Fish and Vegetable Kibble and it's brilliant - less starch and more goodies.

We have fed Stroller twice a day since we had him, plus we were advised to rest him for at least 1-2 hours after his meal as he is a large dog and we had to be aware of bloat, which large, wide chested dogs are prone too. This is, so I understand, where the stomach twists and is usually fatal unless caught very early.

The other reason for the two feeds, out vet advised this because Stroller is a large dog it is alot of food to digest in one go.

Mind you, my vet did ask if I wanted to go through life with one meal a day and then asked me why my dog should - he had a point really.

Hugs

To prevent problems like flatulence torsion etc. they get 2 meals a day and minimun one hour rest after they've been eating.
They eat about 11.00 and about 23.00. After the last meal they go to sleep so they have rest after eating.

Ours have always been fed twice a day, half at 6:30am and half around 6pm. I've always given treats when leaving them, so that they look forward to me going out! Hugo has a medium-dog-sized Jumbone (so he doesn't get fat) when I go to work and a couple of biccies or a Schmacko when he goes to bed. He also has a carrot at lunchtime. Oh and he has a biccie after every wee-wee. When he comes back in, he waits stubbornly by the dog supplies cupboard, preventing anyone from passing, until his demands are met. He was taught from a young age that wee-wee gets biccie and sees no reason to change the habits of a lifetime.

Feed Blue & Nico twice a day, for the reasons Shani has given.

If they have been out for a run always wait at least 45 mins before feeding.

I feed zsa zsa basically whenever she is hungry but i take her food away from her at least 1 hour before exercise and don't give it back to her till 2-3 hours later as this helps to prevent bloat. I also keep her bowls on the floor as heightening food and water bowls can lead to bloat, please read up about this so you understand why food bowls shouldn't be heightened.
she lie's down to eat anything so she does a good job of preventing it herself. I am also looking into raw feeding and i am amazed at what i have found, does anyone raw feed their briard?

I have always fed James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice. They have approx a third of the ration in the morning and the rest at about 7pm. They also have veg, eggs and sardines and also natural youghurt, although Poppy would rather have Greek youghurt with honey!!!
All my dogs have been fed a complete food and have never had serious problems with stomach upsets etc and have all lived to good ages. My previous Briard was 12 years 8mths when we lost her and the vet still had trouble accepting her age, even though he had given her the first course of injections!!
I think if you are happy and you dog is happy with what you feed, then that is all you need to do. I think if their diets are continually changed then problems begin. Just my view but people I have spoke to that have trouble with feeding nearly always seem to be diet hopping.

Hi Lianne

Lulu and Ross have been on a raw food diet for about 6 months now and changing them to RMB was the best thing we ever did!

Go for it Lianne. Best thing I've ever done for my dogs.
My oldest dog who was having trouble getting in the car/up stairs/couldn't get under styles/over styles etc is now able to do all these things since changing her diet.......before that, she was on painkillers, seeing a chiro and having acupunture.
Another bonus is lovely clean white teeth, less poo to clear up and a healthier bank balance! Very Happy

Great to hear a few more of you are turning to RMB. If proof were needed just ask Debs. Out of interest do any of you that have cats feed the RMB too? All four of mine are fed that way and the oldest two who are coming up 11 have never needed to have any dental work done. My vet can't quite believe his eyes Very Happy

we always feed twice a day...early in the morning & again about 2pm.
we start puppies off on skinners & as they get older,we use Omega. we always put a small amount of oil on the food, along with a smal amount of meat or fish. they also have a boiled egg with shell left on,which helps to break down enzymes in the belly, once or twice a week. they have a treat each time they come in from garden.
there was a lot of research gone into dog feeding by the late Bruce McDonald (Great Danes) & he was even called upon by vets for his advice.
We have very well bodied, well muscled, fit & healthy dogs & wouldnt dream of changing our food diet that has worked brilliantly for 25 years.

Olive gets her dinner once a day around 6pm. I also give her a weetabix with milk in the morning but she doesn't always bother eating it. She also rarely finishes her tea (2.5 mugs complete biscuits and a bit of something interesting mixed in, ie sardines, leftover shepherds pie, chicken soup etc). Really not into food at all. The only thing I ever saw her go crazy for was chicken hearts while we were in Germany but I can't find them here.
