It with the greatest sadness that I have to tell you that our beloved Ed died this morning, just 5 days short of his eighth birthday.

Ed had had a bit of a tummy bug the last week or so, but yesterday seemed well and truly over it, bouncing around like a new-born pup, jumping up and barking in the garden and enjoying his food as much as ever. Overnight, he woke us up twice, needing to go out and then this morning, he was very weak and his breathing was clearly very difficult.

He got excited at a trip in the car this morning, even though it was to the vet, who noted his heart rate was very fast, which he thought may be down to the stress of the visit and gave him a couple of jabs to ease his stomach. As we left the consulting room, Ed collapsed in the corridor and I sat on the floor with him as he seemed to be regaining some strength. He then gave a groan, threw up and died right there as I stroked him. The vet was as shocked as anyone, but was in no doubt that his racing heart had been far more than he had first thought and that, had he carried out x-rays, he would have been advising us to have him put to sleep.

In spite of having been spared that horrific decision and Ed having been so energetic so close to the end, our sense of loss is still deep and raw.

Ed had a difficult start in life, his first and second homes labelling him a problem dog and having been threatened with being put down at just one year old. He came to live with me through Briard Rescue in November ’08 and we bonded instantly. He settled down amazingly well and quickly attracted a significant fan base, not just in the UK, but all over the world through his own website, which took him ages to produce (big paws, small keys and all that).

His general hugeness and shagginess was always a talking point and his big brown eyes and ludicrously oversized nose and paws won over everyone he deigned to allow to pet him (or, as they affectionately say here in Wales, “smooth” him).

Before too long, he gained himself a Ruthie as well as a Dad and just over two months ago, Ruthie became his Mummy. He took to this new special relationship immediately and his total love for her was evident from the day they met.

Bless you, dear Eddie dog. You were a real gent and my best friend. You truly embodied that perfect description of a briard: “a heart of gold wrapped in fur”.

So sorry for your loss. Sounds so similar to how I lost my Bronze. He too was a rescue. Take comfort in knowing you gave him a wonderful life, you were obviously destined to be with each other. Sleep tight Ed and run free with all our furry babies we have loved and lost.

Oh, what tragic news. Really feel for you. Although you will be relieved that his illness was short-lived and he didn't have to endure all the problems associated with old age, you will still be reeling from the shock of losing him so unexpectedly, as we know from experience, and in addition to this, you're bound to feel cheated out of many more years together, having lost him at a relatively young age.
Your many happy memories will get you through this terrible time and you will be comforted by the knowledge that you gave him a fresh start in life and shared many years of love and happiness. You did everything you could for him and he was with the person he loved and trusted right until the end.
We will all miss hearing about him. Thinking of you at this very sad time.

We are so, so sorry to hear this news. Having long-admired Ed's website (and in particular his awesome ability to run next to your bike without landing you in a lake) we can only imagine how hard it must be for you to say goodbye. Take comfort from the fact that Ed had a wonderful life with you and treasure the memories. Thinking of you both. x

I have just read your post and am so sorry for your loss, what a terrible shock that must have been for you. We have one of Ed's brothers Archie and I remember corresponding in the past about Ed and his difficult start in life. It is so heartening to read that you gave him such a wonderful life and Ruthie too.....I will be giving Archie an extra big hug and kiss tonight.
Sending you both our heartfelt sympathies at this time and big hugs to you both.

From Archie's mum
Helen
