We really felt that Georgie has deteriorated tonight when we carried her onto the garden to urinate before bedtime. As usual, we carried her to the garden and in the past she has managed to stand and wobble long enough to urinate. Tonight it took several tries as she just could not keep her rear end up and just sat down. We kept lifting her and encouraged her with "good girl" we tried the towel under her stomach though soon stopped as it obviously distressed her. She seemed alert and was sniffing the air but just could not stand. Just on the point of giving up when she made a massive effort and stood just long enough to urinate. We are besides ourselves now, she did not manage to eat much today and so we are going to call the vets tomorrow for another appointment. It is so quick.

John, I am very sorry to hear that. Georgie is still poorly. I hope the vet has some better news for you later today. Sending white light for Georgie and big hugs to you and your family. X

So sorry to hear that your worries continue. It's horrible seeing one of our babies so debilitated and it must be awful suspecting that Georgie might be in pain. Her condition seems to have deteriorated quite rapidly since your first post. Really feel for you and hope you find some solutions soon. Everything crossed here that the vet can come up with some answers.

Talked to the vet and she has suggested an MRI. We talked with another briardist and we were all concerned that she needed to pass her motions. We took her to the garden again, second time today, to see if she could manage to do anything. Again, she could not stand and then .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zddIIFi1_lI&feature=youtu.be
So our thinking now is to try the MRI route to at least find out what the problem is. ALL DEPENDENT though, on the vets opinion. The vet is getting back to us as she has not managed to contact the specialist yet ( to look at xrays ).

Update,
Rang the vet, apparently specialist is on holiday in Austria. Back Monday. They are emailing him the xrays. Said we want to go ahead with MRI. Just hoping Georgie can continue to do her motions until then.

So very painful to watch...poor Georgie...and how hard for you as well. We try so hard to do our best. Hopefully someone will discover what is happening. Praying there will be an answer soon.

Last night I talked with two breeders, one of whom bred Georgie. These were very helpful. The notion of an MRI scan, if done quickly was a possibility at one stage and we had made up our minds to do this. However the problem was that this was to be delayed due to the specialist being away on holiday. Too long to wait. It was suggested that a veternarian college may be an avenue to explore to expediate some quick treatment. After researching this we fount that, regrettably there were none anywhere near us. In any case an MRI would not "give us the outcome we were after" meaning that further surgery would be needed. All this is delaying her treatment and we took the view, as I say, with advice, that it is too much for Georgie to cope with. I slept downstairs with her last night. She was in constant pain, rapid breathing, shifting around and generally poorly, whimpering often. I got up several times and lay next to her, she licked my face, as I comforted her and she would lay down on her pillow and seem to be more at ease. We decided that we did not want her to suffer anymore. We got up early and rang the vet to cancel the MRI route which we were considering, especially as we believed she was suffering more and more and by the time anything was done it would not have been fair to her. We took her to the vets this morning and I carried her in to the surgery. Another vet we had not seen immediately appreciated the seriousness and the pain she must have been experiencing, even with the powerful painkillers. We suspected that after all it was a spinal tumour. We cradled Georgie our beautiful little girl with tears streaming down our faces and said she was a "good girl" as she went to sleep.
Can we say thankyou to everyone who has been in touch, it has been a tortuous time, which we appreciate has been experienced by many others.
So thankyou all.
John and Doreen.

It is with tears streaming down my face that I write this. I am so very sorry that you have had such a terrible time. Looking at the video, there's no way she could continue like that. It's so unfair when she's not that old. I hope you can find comfort in the knowledge that you have done everything possible for her. We have to make such difficult decisions on behalf of our beloved dogs, but we just have to go with our gut instinct and do what we think is in their best interests. I know from experience that the loss is almost unbearable, but hope when you reminisce about all those happy times, it helps you to cope with the grief. Thinking of you.

P.S. The tears are affecting my spelling. I've had to correct this twice. I know there will be many others who will really feel for you, especially those who have experienced a similar loss recently. It's so sad.

John and Doreen

I know you have had to make such a hard decision, but I think you have made the right one. It's so hard to let them go when they have brought so much joy into your lives. May the happy memories you have of your lovely girl help you at this very sad time. Our thoughts are with you.

Hello John and Doreen,

So, so sorry to hear your sad news today. You did everything you could
for your beautiful Georgie and she was suffering so badly with no guarantee of her improving.

It's never easy to say goodbye to such a precious part of our lives, but try and take comfort in the fact that thanks to your courage she is no longer having to endure such pain.

Thinking of you and of all the happiness you brought to her life.

So very sorry to hear that Georgie has crossed the Bridge. Such a very hard decision to take, but the kindest thing we can do for our hairy babies is to save them suffering. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Xx

Here is a video of happier times showing Georgie playing with a reluctant Lucie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owMkGQobTUU
Hope this helps us to remember why we love them so much.
And another Georgie is not as determined as Lucie who is on the left ( Georgie on the right)

Dear John and Doreen

Sad news, so sorry to hear you have lost Georgie. I was following your posts and hoped you would get a happy outcome.
She has left a big void in your world.
They bring so much joy, and I hope the happy memories will soon replace the sadness you are feeling right now.

Have only just read the thread through. So sad to hear about your loss. She was obviously a very special and very loved girl. Thinking of you both at this difficult time. We are in Ripon. If you ever want some briard comfort, Barney will happily come and demand attention from you.

Hello everyone, we thought that we should mention that we have decided we cannot live without a dog in the house and have just collected George a little black boy. Thanks to Linda Coleman who has bred a wonderful litter and to Starry his mum. Got a poorish video here
http://youtu.be/7Y-XHpgLVw8
for you all to see him. Happier times ahead!
And thanks again to all of you who contacted us when we lost Georgie - you helped us so much.

I am so very sorry to read of your loss this poem that my son wrote when he was eight now nearly 19. may help and wish you well with your new bundle of joy

for briards in heaven
a special place is saved
they shine like diamonds
and never seem to age
their hearts are made of gold
from the love they still hold
do not shed a tear
because I am not here
I am always by your side
as true love never dies

best wishes Sarah

He is adorable! So glad you haven't waited too long. He won't replace Georgie, but he will fill the void left and you will, of course, come to love him just as much in his own right. He looks so happy in his new home. He doesn't yet realise what a lucky boy he is, but he will do before long! Wishing you luck with the puppy phase - bet you've forgotten just how hard it is, but I'm sure he's worth it! Please keep the videos coming!
