my darling boy fluke will be 11yrs old soon, he is very short of breath now and is panting loudly non stop, when people come to visit he struggles to get a breath in his excitement, its very distressing for me also, vet put him on steroids to see if it helped, it didnt so he doubled up the dose, and im to phone him on tuesday to let him know the results, unfotunately there is no change, he mentioned another drug that may help, but i cant remember the name , i will want to read up about it before we go ahead,it seemly opens up the lower airways but my vet has never prescribed it before, im just not sure, its breaking my heart, has anyone else had this problem with their briards

Hello Jean,
I'm the same and can't offer any advice, but, hopefully some one will pick this up and have some advice for you. Hope Fluke is better soon and your next vet visit goes well.

No help from me either except to say that I bet he knows how much you love him, which I am sure will comfort him. Amanda

Hi Jean. Had the vet given you an actual diagnosis as it sounds very much to me like partial paralysis of the larynx. It is common in collies and labs and also the elderly dog. Is it worse if the weather is humid. If it is this then anti-inflammetary and steroids and hope for coller weather. I had this with "Rosie" in August and unfortunatly a week after only a week we had to make the agonising descision to call it a day. Her age at 14 years 8mths was against her, despite being otherwise fit and healthy. It could also be heart related so I would push for further tests and x-rays. Hope you get a result.

sorry ive not been back to let you know how fluke is, but we had a death in the family and things have been difficult. Fluke is no better, his breathing specially during the night is awful, the vet put him on steroids for the last 10 days but its not helped any, because he's on them ive had to cut out the pain killers which is hard for him too, im going to the vet tonight and will discuss what options there is for him and will let you all know whathappens

jean , flukey boy and clyde

thanks to all my briard friends for their support x
