Hugo, our beautiful boy has left us. He had surgery tonight to remove his spleen after starting to bleed internally this afternoon, but he crashed twice on the operating table. They brought him back each time as they hoped it might turn out to be a benign tumour, but once they went in they could see that spores had already spread to his liver. The vet wanted to give him an hour or so to see if he came round afterwards, but he deteriorated and we had to agree to let him go soon after.
We are devastated. He has been a handful, but such a loving and lovable one. We wondered if we could ever love another dog as much as we had loved Oscar, but of course we could and did. Hugo was such a clingy, needy boy, he got right under your skin. He made us laugh and smile at his antics. We feel truly blessed to have had him in our lives.
We will miss you forever, darling boy. Go and run with other dogs at last, free from fear and insecurities. Mum and Dad love you loads xxxxxxx

Oh Ruth,
I'm so sorry, I've got tears in my eyes, bloody spleens. You really did the best for your beautiful boy. Our Roxy had exactly the same, but, she died in her sleep. He didn't suffer, and he'll be always at your side.

Dear Ruth, Just read the sad sad news. I am crying for you. Logic doesn't play a part now. I am glad the vet told you that he won't have been suffering. Amanda

Oh Ruth, I have tears in my eyes reading that you have lost your beautiful Hugo. They leave such a large empty hole in our heart when they leave us.

Our thoughts are with you,

Ruth, I am crying my eyes out. I am so so sorry. The pain of losing Tao is still very raw. You did your very best for Hugo. Run free sweet boy, you have a playmate over the Bridge.

Oh how I would love him to be playing with Tao. My insecure boy so wanted friends to play with but was so scared. I'm struggling tonight as you can imagine. I feel for Paul away from home in Amsterdam, but he will be home tomorrow. I've asked for Hugo's ashes so we can scatter them somewhere special and say goodbye to him as we couldn't be with him at the end. No matter how painful it is, he was so worth it.

P.S. Thank you all for your kind words. Means such a lot.

I read this at work and had to rush to the loo so my boss wouldn't see me crying. I also repeat 'bloody spleens'!!!! Can't take the hurt away but my soon to be 11years old big boy is getting extra fuss now as I know his time is coming soon!

I feel so much for all of you who have lost so much this year.

Kathy and getting spoilt Zeta

Another 'bloody spleen' I too am nearly in tears reading this, it brings it all back. We were lucky that Os at 12 came through his surgery but I so understand your pain and feel for you. It was two years ago at this time of year that we had to let Os go and he's still with me every day. They do steal your heart then break it. I don't think there's anything I can say to help beyond know that you have all my sympathy. Your Hugo memories will be with you for ever and that is his gift.

Thanks again, everyone. Your kind words are a comfort.
This weekend has been hard. We picked up his ashes on Friday, took his unopened treats and food sacks to the Dogs Trust on Saturday and today scattered his ashes under the rose hedge in our back garden. Hugo so loved running around on the lawn and sniffing all the plants. He especially loved eating the rose hips in the autumn, so we felt it was appropriate to scatter his ashes there, When we see the flowers bloom next summer, we will think of him and when we eventually move, we will take a bush from the hedge with us and plant it in our new garden.
I don't need to go into any more detail, as you all know or can imagine what it is like to lose your dog. I can only repeat, he was worth the pain we are now feeling, and there will, of course, be another dog for us, but not just yet.

Dear Dog, isn't that a picture of the rose bush behind the photo you always show of him? amanda

Oh yes! Well spotted, Amanda. And let me tell you, if I wasn't so keen to clean up after him, those rose bushes would be sprouting up all over St Helens by now, the amount of hips the little monkey ate at the end of each summer! The memories which make you smile definitely help at this time.

Brion and Dinah compete to snitch the largest windfall apple, which at least is sweet. Hips are really bitter. What a funny taste. A

One year we had a wild rabbit in the garden that was almost tame, it just waited around to be fed rose hips. They are of course very good for you, full of vitamin C.

I am not surprised. You shouldn't forget him. Think what a part he has been in your life, and how special. Amanda
